Frequently Asked Questions

Q1. Is a cheaper degree from Harvard or MIT worth less?
Nope. A Harvard degree is a Harvard degree. Likewise for MIT. A student paying less for his degree is still getting the same degree. Bear in mind you are paying less than the listed price. The discount given by us is the testament to our commitment to your success and job placement at the end of the program.
Q2. Is the employer reference a must?
We believe in having the support of your employer if you were to pursue a part time degree program, as this would help you balance your work and studies better. To incentivise you to get this support, we are giving you a cashback bonus when you provide your employer’s letter of support or reference. Connect with us to get a detailed program schedule and pricing information.
Q3. How long does it take to complete the whole program?
Most of our students complete the program (MBA and MFin) in 2.5 years.
Q4. Is staying on-campus in Harvard or MIT necessary?
Due to COVID-19, all lessons are currently taking place online. We believe that the situation will be better in 2021; so as of now, those on-campus courses that are compulsory for graduation will still be mandatory. Do note that this requirement is subject to change at the discretion of the respective universities.
Q5. What’s the advantage of doing your program compared to signing up directly with the university?

Q6. How much commission do you earn from me when you successfully place me into a high-flying job after I graduate?
Nothing. We take the recruitment commission directly from the companies you are placed in. You do not pay us a single cent in commission for your placement.
Q7. Do I pay for everything at once?
No, if you choose not to. You may pay as you progress along the course, once per term. If you are taking more modules this term, you pay more; conversely, if you take less modules this term, you pay less.

Do note that we charge a one-time application fee of US$100 for all applicants to cover screening and administrative costs. If cost is a concern, you may apply for a application fee refund after you have enrolled in our program.
Q8. Is studying in MIT or Harvard really hard? I don’t have much time and can’t cope.
Based on the past experiences of VC students, handling the courses takes as little as 2 hours per week during the academic terms with our assistance. Students studying without VC support typically spend 20-30 hours per week.

We have been there and done that as students, and we are here to tell you EXACTLY what you need to do to graduate with your degrees. No more, no less.
Q9. After I graduate, are the job placement opportunities by Vanguard College binding? Must I take the job I am placed in?
You would not be bound, but we will sign the first right of refusal with you for the same employer that we place you in. This means that if we get you a placement with employer X, and another headhunter gets you the same placement with employer X, we will have the first right of refusal against the headhunter. This occurs only if we get you the placement first. If you or the headhunter got you the placement with employer X first, we will not place you with the same employer.

This first right of refusal will kick in on the final semester, and will last for a period of 6-months after your graduation. For example, if you graduate in 20th May 2022, our first right of refusal would cease after 19th November 2022. For avoidance of doubt, the 6-month period starts on the day of graduation that is printed on your Harvard or MIT Masters degree or degree transcript, not the day that you receive the physical copy of your degree.
Q10. How many modules/credits will I need to do? Sounds like a lot!
Some of the courses in the MBA program and Master in Finance program are overlapping; we will help you with the conversion of credits so that you take lesser modules in the MBA program, instead of taking the same subjects twice. This saves you both time and money towards graduation,

Note that not all course credits earned are transferrable as they are subject to the universities’ discretion, and you might be required to take two ‘similar’ modules as part of your degree requirements.
Q11. Am I able to take an MBA with a Master of Finance? Some universities do not allow that.
As university policy changes from time to time, our experience tells us that the sequence of admission into a specific program is key. As a rule of thumb, we will get our students admitted to the Master of Finance program first, before application for admission to any other MBA programs.
Q12. How long is a Master’s or MBA dissertation? Do I need to do one?
A Master’s dissertation (or thesis) is usually around 15,000-20,000 words. Most are divided into three to four individual chapters, plus an introduction, conclusion and bibliography. We will advise you accordingly if there is a need for you to complete a dissertation.
Q13. Do I need to sit for exams in the Master of Finance and MBA programs?
Assessments for Master degrees vary by the module that you take. In the MBA program, most of the work is done through essays and coursework. For the Master in Finance, while most of the work is done through coursework, you should expect some formal exams to test knowledge of key concepts and practices (which we will gladly teach you how to pass and excel in)
Q14. Am I allowed to stay in campus/halls when I am doing the compulsory on-campus session?
We understand that MIT and University of Wales Trinity Saint David provide their postgraduate students with housing options when they choose to go for the on-campus session. For Harvard, they work with Harvard University Housing (HUH) to provide off-campus housing options in and around the Cambridge area that are suited to your living needs. For Swiss School of Management, there are no on-campus housing.
Q15. Can I choose to reject the placement offers made by your office after I graduate?
Yes. We will be disappointed, but we also understand that it takes two hands to clap.
Q16. I am really bad at programming, mathematics and statistics. I just don’t want to do finance!
Master of Finance is not about mathematics or programming; although there are components that require certain knowledge and skills in these fields. Rest assured that we will help you pick up these skills within the allocated time. (It’s not that difficult!)

Furthermore, you will be learning these knowledge and skills from the perspective of a supervisor. This means that after you graduate, you are supposed to oversee the work done by your employees / subordinates rather than do the work yourself.
Q17. Can I do the MBA only, or combine the MBA with the Master in Management from Harvard?
Yes, but we have limited enrolment for this combination. Please check with us for more information.
Q18. If I have questions, who should I ask?
You may reach us by phone (+65 6972 8598) or drop us an email at admissions@vanguard.college.sg
